Alitalia Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. (Italian for Alitalia Italian Air Company), operating as Alitalia, is an Italian airline, which took over the name, the landing rights, many planes and some other assets from the liquidation process of the old Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane and the entire Air One. The company has its head office in Fiumicino, Italy. Its main hub is Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Rome. Headquartered in Rome, it operates services to 27 domestic and 53 international destinations in 38 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Alitalia is the world's 19th largest passenger airline by fleet size.
Its fleet operates under four separate Air Operator Certificates due to the CAI merger: Alitalia-CAI (Alitalia) [IATA Code AZ], CAI-First (Alitalia Express) [IATA Code XM], Air One [IATA Code AP] and CAI-second (Volare Airlines) [IATA Code VE].
"Alitalia" is an Italian portmanteau of the words ali (wings), and Italia (Italy).

Airports & airlines
You shouldn’t have many problems finding a reasonably priced flight to Italy. High season is June to September, Christmas and Easter. Shoulder season runs from mid-September to the end of October and again in April. Low season is generally November to March.

Alitalia is the national carrier of Italy and is part of the SkyTeam airline alliance. Its main hubs are in Rome and Milan. Alitalia flies directly to Italy from Chicago, Miami, Boston and New York, with flights from other US cities operated by its partner airlines. From June 2008, Alitalia will fly directly from Los Angeles to Rome.

Alitalia operates Magnifica Business Class and Economy Class on its long haul flights. Passengers travelling in Business Class may access Alitalia lounges. Complimentary meals are available in both classes, with Italian and international cuisine on offer. Passengers requiring a special meal (e.g. Kosher) should ensure that this is booked a minimum of 72 hours before the flight. Inflight entertainment is also provided for all passengers.

MilleMigla is the loyalty program run by Alitalia for its frequent flyers. Membership benefits include priority check in, lounge access and an additional baggage allowance.
