There is no rail transport at Ciampino Airport. The options are to take a bus to a rail station (either metro or regular train) or to take a bus or taxi all the way.^[3]

Bus, then rail transport Ciampino Airport

COTRAL/Schiaffini operates buses from outside the terminal building to Anagnina metro station. A metro ticket to central Rome takes about half an hour to Roma Termini station. Buses go to the Ciampino local train station, from where a train can be taken to Roma Termini station. Train tickets must be bought from a newsagent and stamped before boarding the train. Both bus routes operate roughly once or twice an hour on working days (8:00-12:00 and 16:00-20:00). Travel time is at least 45 minutes on either route.

Road transport Ciampino Airport

• Terravision runs a direct bus service to Termini, taking 40 minutes (about 20 services a day). Terravision also offers buses from Fiumicino airport to Termini, and a transfer bus between the two airports.

• Schiaffini also runs direct buses to Termini station taking 40 minutes, but with far fewer departures than Terravision (see above). These buses are not mentioned on the airport website but they can be found on Schiaffini's own site.

• BusShuttle runs a service similar to Terravision. Their stop near Termini is about 20 metres up the road from Terravision's.

• The fixed fare for a taxi ride to the city centre (inside the Aurelian Walls) is €30, according to the official agreement between Roman taxi driver associations and Rome municipality. This fixed fare is inclusive of up to four passengers AND luggage. ^[4] However, Ciampino-based taxi drivers have a reputation for overcharging, and it is wise to confirm the fixed tariff before getting in the taxi.

Rental cars are available in the airport terminal from all the usual companies.

Ground handling services have been provided by Aeroporti di Roma up to 1999 when it created Aeroporti di Roma Handling (to serve all airlines apart from Alitalia, which continued being handled by Aeroporti di Roma itself). Alitalia provided passenger assistance even before 1999. In 2001 Alitalia created Alitalia Airport and started providing self-handling and third party handling. Air One created EAS and started providing third-party services too. Aeroporti di Roma Handling remains the biggest handler in terms of airlines handled but Alitalia Airport is the biggest handler in terms of airplanes handled as Alitalia aircraft account for 50% of the ones in Fiumicino. There are some private handlers that provide passenger assistance alone: ARE Group, Globeground Italia and ICTS Italia.

Aeroporti di Roma created Airport Security (100%-owned) to provide these services as well as security services to airlines (in competition with other security companies such as IVRI). Airport Security is supervised by Polizia di Stato (Italian State Police), Guardia di Finanza (Italian Customs Police), Ente Nazionale Aviazione Civile (Italy's Civil Aviation Authority) and Aeroporti di Roma.

Leonardo da Vinci is about 35 kilometres (22 miles) by car from Rome's historic city centre. The airport is well served by the 6-lane motorway A91 Roma-Fiumicino and numerous buses and taxis.

The airport is served by the Leonardo Express train operated by Trenitalia, available at the airport terminal. The trip takes 30 minutes (no stops) to Termini Station in Rome - there are two such connections per hour. Alternatively, local trains leave once every 15 minutes, stopping at all train stations. You may have to change at Trastevere, Ostiense (Metro Piramide) or Tuscolana.
