Tuscany Hotels Lodging Guide Italy Hotels villas farmhouses castles bed and breakfast in Tuscany and Chianti detailed descriptions exclusive photo galleries the best that Tuscany has to offer.

Tuscany is one of the most popular regions in Italy, Tuscany stretches from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Apennines. Its main cities include Florence, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo and Livorno. Drive between stunning sites like Florence's cathedral and Uffizi Gallery and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or join a bike tour and pedal past sun-baked olive groves and vineyards. Don't miss the towers of San Gimignano or serene northern hill towns. For a more modern take, hit one of Florence's hip clubs, such as Space Electronic.

Tuscany, like a fine wine, has been some time in the making... From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.

Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.

There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears. Enjoy your visit!

  • Top Ten Things to see in Tuscany Florence Florence is one of the most popular travel cities in Italy. Florence is a beautiful Renaissance city in the heart of Tuscany. Florence has some of Italy's best museums, beautiful cathedrals and churches, and interesting streets and squares with elegant buildings and shops. Siena Siena's principle sights cluster in the maze of narrow streets and alleys around the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo. One of Europe's greatest medieval squares, the piazza sits at the hearth of the city's 17 contrade, a series of parishes whose ancient rivalries are still acted out in the twice-yearly Palio. Once a capital to rival Florence, Siena is Italy's prettiest medieval town, still endowed with the grandeur of the age in which it was at its peak (1260-1348). Pisa For much of the middle ages, Pisa's powerful navy ensured its dominance of the western Mediterranean. Trading links with Spain and north Africa, in the 12th century brought vast mercantile wealth and formed the basis of a scientific and cultural revolution that is still reflected in Pisa's spending buildings, especially the Duomo, Baptistry and Campanile (Leaning Tower). Cortona Cortona was founded by the Etruscans and apart from being one of the oldest hill-towns in Tuscany, it also one of the most scenic. Lucca Lucca'a regular grid of streets still follows the pattern of the former Roman colony founded in 180 BC. Great, solid ramparts, built in the 16th to 17th century, help to shut out traffic, making the city a pleasant place to explore on foot. Lucca's peaceful narrow lanes wind among the medieval buildings, opening suddenly to reveal churches, tiny piazzas, and many other reminders of the city's long history, including a Roman amphitheatre. Massa Marittima town Set in the Colline Metallifere (metal-bearing hills) where lead, copper and silver ores were mined as early as Etruscan times, Massa Marittima is far from being a grimy industrial town. Excellent examples of Romanesque architecture survive from the period when the town became an independent republic (1225-1235). Montepulciano town This is one of Tuscany's highest hill-town, its walls and fortifications offering broad views over Umbria and Southern Tuscany, and the vineyards providing the Vino Nobile wine that has made its name famous. Montalcino town Hilltop Montalcino sits at the hearth of vineyards that produce Brunello, one of Italy's finest red wine. Monteriggioni town Monteeriggioni is a gem of a medieval hilltop town. It was built in 1203 and ten years later became a garrison town. It is completely encircled by high walls with 14 heavily fortified towers, built to guard the northern borders of Siena's territory against invasion by Florentine army. San Gimignano town The thirteen towers that dominate San Gimignano's majestic skyline were built by noble families in the 12th and 13th century, when the town's position, on the main pilgrim route from northern Europe to Rome, brought in great prosperity. The plague of 1348, and the diversion of the pilgrims route, led to its decline as well as its preservation. Today only one of the towers, the Torre Grossa is open to the public. For a small town, San Gimignano is rich in works of art, good shops and restaurants. Pitigliano town Pitigliano is spectacularly situated high above the cave-riddled cliffs of the Lente Valley. Its maze of tiny medieval streets includes a small Jewish ghetto, formed in the 17th century by Jews fleeing from Catholic persecution.
