Florence is the true home of classical art, its well worn cobbled streets tramped by the likes of Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci who lived and worked here under the patronage of the powerful ruling Medici family. Today those who holiday in Florence are awestruck by the architectural beauty of the city.

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. It is home to some of the greatest thinkers of that time period, if not all of history. Francesco Petrarch, Dante, Galileo Galilei, Nicolo Machiavelli, The Medici, Giovanni Boccaccio, Michelangelo Buonarotti to name only a few. The city is full of museums including the Accademia which houses the statue of David; the Uffizi which holds thousands of Renaissance and earlier treasures. One can merely walk and admire the famous architecture lining the streets, much of which was created in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. The famous Arno river runs through the middle of the great city and provides a beautiful view, especially of the Ponte Vecchio, which is the only bridge that remained standing after World War II.

Some of the greatest places to see are the churches of Santa Croce, Il Duomo, and San Lorenzo. But there is even more than art and architecture here. Shopping is everywhere in Florence; from top designers to shops and markets lining the street.

The city is also home to the European Univeristy Institute, the European research institute set up by the European Commission. From there, or further up from Fiesole, the view is magnificent! Especially by sunset. Piazzale Michelangelo is also recommended for a nice sunset.
