All these features make Viareggio one of the most popular and exclusive destinations to spend a holiday in with thousand opportunities. | SOME HISTORY A millennium ago the territory, where today the city of Viareggio rises, was occupied by the sea and the hinterland was at most made up by marshes. In 1417 the Lucchesi, after bloody quarrels with the Pisani on the rule of the city, built a castle and gave it the name of Castrum de via regia (according to the prevailing interpretation, the city took the name of Viareggio from here). Then the Lucchesi changed the landing place into a canalized harbour, reclaiming the marshes nearby the coast. In 1550 the Senate of Lucca decreed the replacement of the old castle with a new building, the tower called “of Matilde”, that became later the real symbol of the city and the lynch-pin of Viareggio’s story. The opening of the first bathing establishments was in 1823, when the inhabitants of the city were already well over 4000. In the beginning of 1900 the city had a remarkable tourist impulse and became a holiday destination deserving the appellative of “the Tirreno Pearl”. |
