Vinci rises along the south-western side of the Albano mount, in the low Valdarno area.
The local economy is mainly based on the production of vine grape, olives and on the activity of numerous industries working for the manufacturing of plastic material and potter's clay and for the production of paper, clothes and furniture.
The place name probably comes from the Latin "vincus", with the meaning of "wicker", and later this latter got its actual form according to the Latin word "vincis".
The village of Vinci was born during the Middle Ages around a fortified castle built by the Guidi's Counts, who were extending their influence on that area.
Few years later Vinci passed to the Alberti's Counts and during the first half of the XII-th century, the Republic of Florence bought the village and annexed it to its domains.
The inhabitants, who were already influenced by its ancient lords, organized numerous rebellions against the Florentine power and in 1315 they opposed to Florence, being helped by the commander Uguccione della Faggiola, who governed the village for three years.
Entered again the Florentine orbit, the village of Vinci subdued the consequences of the conflicts existing between Florence and Pisa that quarrelled for the control of the territories of the Valdarno area.
After a peaceful period, the conflicts started again and culminated in a real war that, at the end of the XIV-th century, saw the inhabitants of Vinci fighting against the troops hostile to the Florentine power.
The situation was pacificated just in the middle of the XVI-th century, when the Medici's Grand Dukes came to the power and started both to increase the local economy and to embellished the town by building elegant palaces.
Among famous people who were born in Vinci we remind the world-wide famous artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).
